South Korean researcher Hwang Woo-suk faked results of at least nine of 11 stem cell lines he claimed to have created, his university said Friday, in the first confirmation of allegations casting his purported breakthroughs under suspicion.

서울대 조사위는 지난 23일 기자 회견을 열고 황우석 교수팀이 주장한 11개의 줄기 세포 중 적어도 9개가 가짜라고 발표했다. 줄기 세포 진위 논란 및 논문 조작 혐의를 처음으로 확인한 것이다.

In a May paper in the journal Science, Hwang claimed to have created 11 stem cell lines matched to patients in an achievement that raised hopes of creating tailored therapies for hard-to-treat diseases.

지난 5월 사이언스지에 발표한 연구 논문에서 황교수는 11개의 환자 맞춤형 줄기 세포를 만들었다고 했다. 이것은 난치병 환자를 위한 맞춤형 치료의 희망을 증가시켰다.

But one of his former collaborators last week said nine of the 11 cell lines were faked, prompting reviews by the journal and an expert panel at Seoul National University, where Hwang works.

그러나 그의 동료 중 한사람인 노성일(미즈메디 병원 이사장)은 지난 주 11개 줄기 세포 중 9개가 조작된 것이라고 발표하여, 사이언스가 검증에 나섰고 황교수가 일하는 서울대학교도 자체 조사위를 구성하고 조사에 들어갔다.

In its first report on its progress Friday, the panel said it found that "the laboratory data for 11 stem cell lines that were reported in the 2005 paper were all data made using two stem cell lines in total."

지난 23일, 서울대 조사위의 첫 보고에서 '2005년 논문에 보고된 11개의 줄기 세포 연구 데이터는 2개의 줄기 세포 라인으로 만들어졌다"고 밝혔다.

To create fake DNA results purporting to show a match, Hwang's team split cells from one patient into two test tubes for the analysis - rather than actually match cloned cells to a patient's original cells, the university said.

서울대 조사위는 황교수팀이 환자의 원래 세포와 복제 세포를 매치시키기 위함이 아니라 위조된 DNA 결과를 만들기 위해 한 환자의 줄기 세포를 2개의 시험관에 나눈 것이라고 밝혔다.

"Based on these facts, the data in the 2005 Science paper cannot be some error from a simple mistake, but cannot be but seen as a deliberate fabrication to make it look like 11 stem cell lines using results from just two," the panel said.

또한 서울대 조사위는 "이러한 사실에 근거하여 2005년 사이언스 연구 논문의 데이터는 간단한 실수로 여길 수 없으며, 단 2개의 줄기세포를 11개의 줄기 세포 라인으로 보이기 위한 결정적인 조작이다."라고 밝혔다.

The panel said DNA tests currently being performed would confirm if the remaining two stem cell lines it had found were actually successfully cloned from a patient.

서울대 조사위는 DNA 테스트를 통해 잔존해 있는 2개의 줄기 세포 라인이 실제로 환자로부터 성공적으로 복제된 것인지 사실이 확인될 것이라고 말했다.

In light of the revelations, the panel said it would now also investigate Hwang's other landmark papers - which include another Science article in 2004 on the world's first cloned human embryos, and an August 2005 paper in the journal Nature on the first-ever cloned dog. The journals already are reviewing all the work.

이와 같은 상황을 폭로하면서, 서울대 조사위는 황교수의 세계 최초로 복제된 인간 배아 연구 논문인 2004년 사이언스 연구 논문을 포함한 다른 획기적인 연구 논문들까지 조사할 것이라고 밝혔다. 이미 그의 모든 업적은 재조사에 착수된 상태이다.

"This kind of error is a grave act that damages the foundation of science," the panel said.

서울대 조사위는 "이와 같은 오류는 과학의 기반을 훼손하는 중대한 행위"라고 밝혔다.

Hwang, a veterinarian, has maintained his science is sound and that tests will prove his case.

수의사인 황교수는 자신이 과학은 건전하고 그 실험이 자기 자신을 증명할 것이라고 계속 주장했다.

However, he admitted last week to "fatal errors" in the May report and asked Science to withdraw the paper. He acknowledged that at the time of publication, his team had created only eight cell lines. But he said three more were created later.

그러나 지난 주 2005년 5월 사이언스에 실린 논문을 “치명적인 실수”가 있으므로 논문 철회를 요청한 바 있다. 그는 논문을 발표할 당시에는 연구팀이 단 8개의 줄기 세포 라인만 만들었다고 했다. 하지만 나중에 3개를 더 만들었다고 말했다.

The panel said Friday that it found no records of two of the other stem cell lines Hwang claims to have created. Four others died from contamination, and another three were in the nurturing stage and hadn't yet become full stem-cell lines.

지난 23일, 서울대 조사위는 황교수가 만들었다는 다른 줄기 세포 라인 2개에 관한 기록이 없다고 밝혔다. 줄기 세포 4개는 오염으로 죽었고, 또 다른 3개는 배양 단계에서 완전한 줄기 세포라인이 되지 않았다고 했다.

The university panel didn't immediately specify any action that would be taken against Hwang in light of its findings.

서울대 조사위는 이번 발표와 관련하여 황교수에 대해 즉각적으로 구체적 행동을 취하지 않았다.
